Gender Equity Belongs to Everybody

UTS 2022 Gender Equity Showcase

Partners: University of Technology Sydney (UTS)

In March 2022, and aligning with International Women’s Day on 8 March, the team from the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) held a showcase of all of the work happening throughout the university that aimed to support and improve gender equity.

Good Point Design was invited to design the showcase, developing a theme that would cretae a strong and effective visual system that would elevate the work, as well as being compatible with UTS branding.

The design also needed to facilitate the sharing of a large amount content, in different forms, and it needed to provide a suitable backdrop for special events that would be hosted in the exhibition space throughout the month of March.

Projects and case studies were grouped around six main theme areas of Engagement, Education, Communities, Mentoring, Pathways and Recognition. The design was modular, with the projects and the themes linked as separate nodes that were all part of a broader network. This concept underpinned the showcase’s statement that gender equity is not achieved through one single measure, but rather as a result of an organisation-wide effort, at the systemic and on-the-ground level and all in between.

The core colours of mauve and orange contrasted against a black background and served to support the concept of the network without detracting from the detail of the individual case studies.

Illustrations of people were also developed for the showcase, which popped against the black background and worked to draw people into the exhibition space. The illustrations aim to reflect the diversity of the university’s staff and student population and to underline the point that we all play a role in improving gender equity, and that it benefits each of us.

The showcase was displayed with decals, using the black walls to full effect, and inviting viewers in to get ‘personal’ with the work, as opposed to viewing it through glass and more formal displays.

There was also a wall dedicated to profiles of women throughout UTS whose work actively contributed to gender equity, in a multitude of ways.

Good Point Design worked closely with the following people on this showcase:

  • Dr Bilquis Ghani, Gender Equity Programs, UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion

  • Catharine Pruscino, Program Manager, Respect.Now.Always

  • MaryAlice Campbell, Project Support

  • Amy Grady, Communications Support

  • UTS Printing Services (what a team)

  • UTS SOUL student volunteers
